BarCamp-LA5, day 1

An update on my earlier post on BarCampLA5. Post BarCamp first day, and I have to say I’m pretty impressed. Wonderfully diverse bunch of people all the way from marketing types, to musicians, to actors/actresses/comediennes, to web bloggers, to linux kernel programmers! There was free entrance with pre-registration, free food, and free T-shirt to mark the occasion, and a full day of interesting talks by interesting people.

During the intro everyone (ALL attendees) had to give their name and three tags to best describe what they’re about, which really highlighted all the diversity.

BarCamp LA5

One girl I met was gathering ideas for internet marketing for her boyfriend’s website, Liam Show, and was learning a lot of generating revenue through thing slike google AdSense.

A number of attendees were hiring and made a point of mentioning it during intros and on an ad-hoc hand scribbled job notice board.

The most interesting talk I heard was by Travis Savo, of Verse Studios. He gave an awesome talk on his passion of the last 10+ years, bring intelligence to bits, or creating digital life as he called it. Website for this latest project is http://graythumb.org/ (currently offline after a good hacking). It’d be hard to cover everything he talked about but a highlight for me was when he described telling this thing to go figure out problems, and it would come up with solutions even he didn’t quite understand, but which worked!

There are some videos up on google video too under the name “autocore”. Here’s one for convenience..
